STONE CARVINGS
Stone and metal resist the hot and humid weather of Bali better than wood or paintings. That’s why stone carvings don’t deteriorate so fast as carvings made from other materials and can be found all over the island decorating shrines, temples, palaces and houses, covered in moss but resisting the pass of time.
Stone Carvings are often located standing on guard at the entrance of buildings as they represent the line between two different worlds. Some of the statues depict demons and deities as well as religious and mythological characters with menacing expressions while others are based on scenes from everyday life in Bali or animal figures. The most common kind of stone used to make Balinese carvings is called Paras, a grey volcanic rock known to be soft enough for this purpose.
The technique and themes of the stone carvings in Bali have remained relatively unchanged over time as tourists usually prefer lighter and easier to transport pieces of art. The knowledge of the artists has been passed over for generations and places like the town of Batubulan are famous for having some of the best stone carvers in the world.
