Bali Masks
INDONESIA MASKS
Masks in Bali were first made as a religious act rather than to create beauty due to the importance of religion. Mask performances have taken place in Bali for more than a thousand years and are still present nowadays serving the purpose of being offerings to the gods and a way for people to express their beliefs.
Masks can represent deities, demons, humans or animals and can be sacred or non-sacred. If somebody puts on a sacred mask he is believed to receive the power from the mask as deities are present in everything including masks. Heros and heroines are handsome while animals take mythological forms. Low spirits or demons usually have big eyes, thin noses and mouths and fangs.
Other islands of Indonesia like Java, Lombok or Sulawesi have different kinds of masks. Some Javanese traditional masks like the ones found in this store usually have batik motifs and original colors and can be made from hibiscus or pule wood.
Topeng dances are common in some of these Indonesian islands. They are theatre dramas where dancers wear masks and perform ancient stories. The characters can be divided in “Topeng Manis” or refined and “Topeng Keras” or rough but there are also narrators and comic actors. At the end the balance between positive and destructive forces should not be broken.
