Bali Eagles
INDONESIA EAGLES
Garuda means “eagle” in Indonesian language. Hindu mythology tells us that Winata was enslaved by the serpents of the underworld called Nagas. At that time her powerful son Garuda came out of the egg and wanted to make his mother free again. The snakes asked him to get them the elixir of immortality called amerta. Garuda had to fight for the amerta but he finally won the battle and his mother was freed.
Wisnu saw him and asked him to serve him as his vehicle. Wisnu, God of preservation, represents power, continuity and order and can be manifested in different incarnations. He is often depicted riding on Garuda´s back. Garuda, the enemy of all serpents, became Wisnu´s escort for traveling between Heaven and Earth.
In Bali Garuda´s image is often placed at cremation towers since it is believed to take the soul of the dead person to the Gods. Although Garuda is mostly revered in Bali because of the strong Hindu influence, an eagle is nowadays the national symbol of Indonesia representing invincibility.
